Cool Tools – GIMP
This is the second in a series of articles in which we will discuss tools that we like to use and feel may benefit you as well. We will discuss what we like about it and what we don’t and why we chose to use it.
Today we discus our image editing software. Our option is GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program), an opensource software that has been around since November of 2015.
Pros
- Opensource1 – This allows us a lot of flexibility. We can, with some programing skills, change most anything about the layout, options and most anything else. With opensource, if you DO change the source code, you must release it into the public as well. i.e., you can not charge for it.
- Free – As a general rule for opensource software, it is 100% free.
- When issues are found, repairs are generally pretty quick. Usually no longer than a few weeks to a month or so.
- Not too different from PhotoShop. A lot of Windows migrators find the transition quite easy.
Cons
- No real support – Unlike commercial software where you may have a few months or permanent support, Opensource is community supported with many forums where you can get a lot of great help.
- Some features from PS are a bit harder to get done in GIMP. With a little practice, it gets done.
Notes:
- 1. Opensource
* We have been using this program for many years with great results.
So, have you used GIMP or know someone? Let us know in the comments. Also, feel free to ask about GIMP and we will do our best to answer you.
