My Post Industrialization Experience…

My Post Industrialization Experience – How I got here from over there…

Why I refer to SoBeCoWorks as a Citizen Incubator…

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary we have;
Citizen : an inhabitant of a city or town; especially : one entitled to the rights and privileges of a freeman
Incubator : an organization or place that aids the development of new business ventures especially by providing low-cost commercial space, management assistance, or shared services

We are now in the “Information Age”, which is “Post-Industrialization” and many baby-boomers who were educated & worked during the period known as the Industrial Age in this country now find themselves ill-prepared for the Information Age but they don’t have to be.

Will it require effort on the part of the baby-boomers to re-train (re-education)? Yes.

Will it require baby-boomers to re-tool (new skills training)? Yes.

Now because we are in the Information Age the re-training & re-tooling can happen from the comfort of our home or we can accelerate this re-training & re-tooling by visiting a CoWorking Space where the philosophy of most CoWorking Spaces is creative collaboration, information sharing, & skills sharing. CoWorking Spaces are the DIY spaces of the future and every downtown, every Main St should have such a gathering place either planned or already open to assist in the transition of the boomer population from an industrialization mind set to the information age mindset.

Now what is the information age mindset. Well according to Thomas L. Friedman in his NY Times article called “Need a Job? Invent It” he shared insight that I’ve come to recognize but did not know how to express in writing since I too am a baby boomer and I myself am treading into new information age territory. Yes I am now becoming an information age blogger and treading water mighty fast to keep afloat.

In his article, Need a Job? Invent It, Thomas L. Friedman states that “what you know matters far less than what you can do with what you know.” I once designed & built state of the art telecommunication networks for fortune 500 companies. I designed clocking propagation plans, optimized bandwidth allocation, and made sure PBX signaling was properly passed thru these highly sophisticated digital multiplexors and I travelled all throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Central America & Puerto Rico designing networks, teaching what I knew, and sharing my knowledge & extremely specialized skills with our clients, then one day everything changed.

But in reality it didn’t occur in one day, it was gradual and over time it was kind of the story of the frog in the pot of water. The premise is that if a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.

I, ladies & gentlemen, was becoming frog toast (sapo toastado) but several years ago while sitting at home scanning the web I discovered something. I discovered the information age had arrived and if I wanted to retrain and rebuild my tech savy self I could simply by leaving my home office and walking into a new world of self motivated entrepreneurship.
