Speaking Their Language
We’re not talking a foreign languages, we’re talking industry terms.
Let’s use the main image of this post. It’s clearly some form of web technology. Is it analytics? Is it a web language? Well, before you deal with a company, you should know some of their industry terms.
You don’t want to look like an amateur
Let’s say you are consulting with a banker and he throws out the term “Amortization Table”1. You should have a clue as to what this term means if it is relevant to what you are consulting.
Understanding their terminology can go a long way
It helps them feel comfortable with you because you’re “one of them” or you at least took the time to really understand their industry, even if only on a basic level.
Specialize – If you can
Taking this idea of understanding their language a bit further, if you specialize in one or two (related) industries, you can not only get more work but even charge a bit of a premium.
If you know their industry inside and out, how the economy affects them, how politics affects them, you will have a happier client as well as far more respect from the client.
Notes:
- Basically, this is the schedule of your payments for a loan – “The Amortization Table“
